Hall of Shame Moment: Team Guido’s Blocking Maneuver

by Jeffrey Clinard -- 10/16/2002
Joe and Bill, aka Team Guido, were a team of two life partners in the first Amazing Race who raced with intelligence for the entire race, only to be eliminated on the final leg, with themselves in Alaska while the remaining teams were in New York, celebrating the victory of Rob and Brennan. A fitting end to a team that made themselves, to quote Kevin and Drew "Outcasts." But one moment stands out as particularly shameful in their quest to win.

Joe and Bill, aka Team Guido, were a team of two life partners in the first Amazing Race who raced with intelligence for the entire race, only to be eliminated on the final leg, with themselves in Alaska while the remaining teams were in New York, celebrating the victory of Rob and Brennan. A fitting end to a team that made themselves, to quote Kevin and Drew "Outcasts."

Face it, Team Guido borders on the line of being a Reality TV Hall of Shame team, but doesn't quite make it. They were a smart team, a competitive team, and they finished with a respectable third-place in the race. They made several mistakes, such as being too cocky about their knowledge of Paris, and getting to the sewer Roadblock in almost last place, and betraying their alliance partners once they arrived in Paris. They also nearly were eliminated at a checkpoint to which they had actually won a fast-forward. Indeed, they would have lost, but Nancy and Emily violated a major rule, were fined 24 hours, and lost instead.

However, they performed one incident that was so shameful it cannot be ignored. In episode 5, all teams needed to get from Tunisia to Rome, Italy. Joe and Bill secured their tickets, but then instructed the ticket agents to not allow the others to get the same transport. Wait, that is not enough; three other teams worked together to get Nancy and Emily, Drew and Kevin, and Rob and Brennan faster transport to Rome via Milan. Did Joe and Bill suck it up and make the same arrangements? No. They counted on the 10-minute window the other teams had to play defensive blockers, and try to prevent the other teams from making their flights. They held up traffic at the customs checkpoint, and then they pulled the lowest stunt they could muster.

They blocked Nancy. With three teams to try to block, what did they do? Block Nancy. Not the Frat boys (Drew and Kevin), who would have pushed them on the baggage return without a thought. Not the lawyers, who also would have pushed them off. Not even Emily, the adventurous daughter, who might have kicked them in the shins if they had pulled a restraining stunt.

No, they went for Nancy, a middle-aged woman who was probably too nice to fight back. It was probably the right person to put against Team Guido, but it didn't work, and made Team Guido out to be the "Outcasts," according to Drew and Kevin.

Joe and Bill were a good racing team. They played it smart many times. But they lost the race, and more so, lost the respect of America. Their actions earned a mention as a Reality TV Hall of Shame Moment.

Jeffrey Clinard lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his kittens, Lam and Princess. This article is dedicated to his brother Steven, a long suffering Anaheim Angels fan, who finally got to see his team go to the World Series (breaking the curse). He asks that Steven forgive him for not going with him to see it live; it's a regret Jeffrey will carry the rest of my life. Jeffrey can be reached at jclinard@earthlink.net.
